The humble envelope is taken for granted but in the UK we use over 60 million envelopes each day, thats over 300 tonnes of potential waste because in many areas envelopes can not be recycled, if they were recycled 3 trees per tonne is still required to produce recycled paper, for the best quality virgin paper envelopes 13 trees per tonne is required, if the paper is to be white then some kind of bleaching process has to be used. for every tonne of envelopes that go to landfill an area of 3 square metres is required, many padded hybrid envelopes go direct to landfill.
We decided to design and manufacture a reusable envelope system that would reduce the number of trees required for envelope production and also reduce the amount of land filled by used envelopes. Shuttlepost is quite different but most innovative changes are and the advantages make the change worthwhile.
